The New River Valley Challenge is a combination 43-mile hilly road challenge and 49-mile relaxing cruise on the New River Valley Trail. Although the challenge can be completed in one day by the very fit cyclist, it is best when done as a two-day ride, with a night spent in the delightful town of Galax. The first day of road riding is indeed a challenge, taking the cyclist over the hilly terrain of Pulaski, Wythe, and Carroll counties and past 4,500-acre Claytor Lake. Spend the night in Galax, where you’ll find several moderate hotels, a bike shop, and numerous restaurants. Time your stay for mid-August and take in the Old Timers Fiddlers’ Convention, one of the oldest and largest such conventions in the world. Enjoy your second day on the New River Trail State Park rails-to-trail, nearly 50 miles of gorgeous trail, most of which parallels the New River all the way back to the finish in Pulaski. Terrain: Ride is best described in two parts. First half is very hilly and suitable only for strong cyclists. Second half on the trail has flat to very mild grades. Trail is easier when cycling in the north direction, as this ride does.
