The Peaks of Otter Challenge first rolls through Botetourt County’s fertile valley and historic towns that lie between the majestic Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains. After the 26-mile warmup, the challenge leaves the valley behind for a rigorous climb up the Blue Ridge at Bearwallow Gap. Stop for a rest or even the night at Peaks of Otter. The lodge, overlooking a scenic lake and with spectacular views of 3,875-foot Sharp Top Mountain, is in perfect harmony with nature and the only place one can stay right on the Blue Ridge Parkway System. After you reluctantly leave the Peaks of Otter, 20 more miles of fantastic Blue Ridge Parkway cycling await, affording extraordinary views on either side of the Blue Ridge. Finally, the descent back down to the valley is a just reward and a remarkable finish to the Peaks of Otter Challenge. Terrain: First half is gently rolling. The climb up the Blue Ridge is extremely challenging and not suitable for beginners or casual cyclists. Advanced difficulty.
