The Luray Classic is one of the most scenic, spectacular, and thrilling rides in all of Virginia. While this classic is designed to be a one-day ride for advanced cyclists, the average rider will require two days to complete this loop ride. Starting in Front Royal, the classic takes the cyclist 30 miles down the Skyline Drive, one of the most scenic roads in America. Halfway through the ride is Luray, a small Shenandoah Valley town popular for its renowned caverns and as a base for exploring Shenandoah National Park. The second half of the classic requires a climb up Massanutten Mountain and a delightful spin through Fort Valley and the George Washington National Forest. Terrain: Mountainous. Long, steep climbs and twisting descents. Gentle terrain after Massanutten Mountain. Advanced difficulty.

We did this ride as a group of 30 starting in Strasburg from the Ramada. Total miles around 95. Drizzly rain at the start made a few bail out. Plenty of climbing up Skyline Drive with the peak being Hogback Mountain. Nice rolling cruise to Rt 211 that takes you on a WONDERFUL decent into Luray. Afetr a lunvh in Luray most of us went on to climb Massanutten and finish the ride. The climb up Massanutten Mountain on Fort Valley Road was significantly steeper than this guide indicates. Expect grades of %12-14 on the last mile. The final 20-30 miles through the valley is some of the most fun riding you can do. Rolling (generally downhill) terrain, takes you to the finish of a fantastic and very challenging ride.

This is truly a classic ride. Skyline Drive is great and the ride back through the valley after the big climb is awesome. The traffic in the last 10 miles is pretty heavy; too bad some people have to be in such a hurry and can't just relax and enjoy the scenery.
