We drove this road in early April 2009 and found it to be pretty rough in spots, probably not doable in a sedan. The scenery was outstanding with many excellent distant views as you approach Crown King. Along the way, Palace Station was neat to see even if you can't go inside. Don't think this is a Highway, even if the name is Senator Highway. We found it to be rocky with several creek crossings (not too deep).
Load up the family and head out for a day long journey. Most any sedan can make the trip. Drive slow and enjoy the outdoors. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen. The only knock for myself was the road was so smooth, that I didn't need a high clearance vehicle. But, make sure that there is air in your spare and you have plenty of water as, there is little cell service if any.
