All this talk about Slickrock: precision grunt work, interval straining; friction, stiction, and traction; butt off the back, nose to the bars; pitch and twitch, potato chip, crotch split; rock rash; prodigious, profound, and improbable maneuvers; protracted acclivities, free-falling declivities; sandstone surfing. You can get winded just thinking about it. If you long for a straightforward, scenically captivating ride, head out to Hurrah Pass. Here you’ll have opportunities for viewing petroglyph panels, quenching your thirst at a fern-encrusted spring, plus a whole lot of canyon country viewing. From the pass, you’ll sight across a huge chunk of incised terrain carved out by the Colorado River and preserved in Canyonlands National Park. Since technical difficulty is generally low, you can spend more time sightseeing than worrying whether you might stuff your front wheel. Despite the generous amounts of graded roads, 20 miles is nothing to scoff at. Strong novice riders will fare well if they pace themselves and keep well-watered and fed. The return leg can seem endless if you reach Hurrah Pass with your fuel gauge reading near empty. Tread: 7 miles of light duty sand and rock road, 2.2 miles of sand and rock doubletrack. Two creek crossings will wet your toes.
