Renowned as a retirement community boasting a multitude of golf courses and discount, factory-outlet shops, St. George is quickly becoming a hotspot for mountain biking. It’s not because this southwest corner of Utah is noted for its balmy summers and temperate winters, thus called Dixie, but largely due to glowing reports from mountain-bike racers who have bragged about the outrageous Red Rock Rampage. In fact, the response has been so positive that St. George has played host to the World Senior Games and American Mountain Bike Challenge (AMBC) Finals. Scout out the course’s many junctions and collect your bearings on your first lap; then nudge the starting line with your buddies and charge at race pace on ensuing loops. When you’re through, you’ll no doubt mark your calendar and start training for the springtime event. Tread: 5.2 miles of sand and rock doubletrack and 3.3 miles of desert singletrack.
