The farther you venture from Escalante on the Hole-in-the-Rock Road, the less likely you are to encounter others. Motorists with four-wheel-drive occasionally venture all the way out to the Hole-in-the-Rock itself, but don’t rely on them. Escalante has medical facilities but is located 40 miles away from the trailhead via slow-going washboard roads.
From Dance Hall Rock, pedal southeast on the Hole-in-the-Rock Road. Fiftymile Bench is a succession of salient cusps protruding from the unwavering Straight Cliffs above. Opposing the cliffs, an endless expanse of burnt slickrock extends to the east. Portions of the road are smooth; others are washboarded. You dip into, and struggle out of, numerous dry washes that cross the road.
