Who says you have to travel to Moab to ride burly trails over denuded sandstone? Red Mountain offers a taste of southern Utah’s canyon country but is miles away in northern Utah’s mountainlands. This ride is a real mouthful, and depending on your fat-tire palate, you’ll either chomp at Red Mountain like a prehistoric carnivore or spit it out in disgust. Red Mountain is Vernal’s version of the infamous Moab Rim jeep trail—it’s straight up and unyielding. Although Red is double the elevation (gulp!), it’s many times longer. That means the grade is tolerable (whew!). But unlike the Moab Rim, where tire traction is impeccable, the route up Red has been busted into ledges stacked atop one another and all dusted heavily with sand and loose rock. Brute power, finesse, and unfaltering balance are needed for the many calculated moves and precision gruntwork. Start this route with 100 points and deduct one for each dab. He or she with the most points atop Red Mountain is the champ. As the elevation increases, so do the views of the Uinta Basin below and of the Uinta Mountains above. Steinaker Reservoir interrupts the lower desert lands with its shimmering, ultramarine surface, while treeless peaks rise sluggishly above timbered slopes. Each holds additional promising bike routes.
