For decades, anglers have gloated over the trophy-size fish pulled from Flaming Gorge Reservoir, and boaters have been awe-struck by its cliff-bound shoreline. Landlubbers, like hikers and horseback riders, have relished the nearby High Uinta Wilderness for its solitude and pristine terrain. Now mountain bikers are reaping similar rewards around the Flaming Gorge area through the proactive efforts of the Ashley National Forest. Tucked away on the east flank of the Uinta Mountains are a handful of designated mountain bike routes worth centering your next vacation around, and Dowd Mountain is a fine introduction to the region and its trails. This undaunting loop winds through stands of dispersed ponderosa and lodgepole pine trees that shield wildflower-speckled alpine meadows from the glaring sun. The Uintas rise to lofty heights above timberline in one direction, while Wyoming’s parched prairies sprawl to the earth’s curvature in the other.
