Albion Basin is the heart of the central Wasatch Range. It was here that the Little Cottonwood glacier was born 40 millennia ago. A thick wedge of snow accumulated in these highlands and compressed to ice, which then began creeping down toward the Great Salt Lake Valley. Simultaneously, smaller glaciers descended from the southern ridge to join the main trough. A visit to Albion Basin would not be complete without a trip to Secret Lake. This icy, glacial pool cupped beneath Devil’s Castle makes for an ideal lunch spot or midday siesta. The rocky 0.5-mile-long path is closed to bikes, but it is a pleasant hike. Be sure to pack along a camera and plenty of film because the abundance of colorful wildflowers makes a rainbow seem pale.
