Richards Hollow Trail is the grand-finale descent of the cross-country trek on the Great Western Trail from Logan Canyon to Hyrum. If you tackle that epic tour, be forewarned. The 30 miles of trails and dirt roads preceding Richards is a serious endeavor, one that crosses five topographic quadrangles, demands legs of steel, and requires a monster car shuttle. Here’s a long-sought-after, loop alternative. You’ll savor the same singletrack descent but with half the distance and one-third less climbing. If you’re a singletrack aficionado, you’ll find a bit of everything in Richards Hollow: serpentining trail through luscious meadows, multiple water crossings that are a tad too wide to bunny hop, and gnarly technical sections that require adept skills. Richards Hollow will put a grin on your face the shape of a Chiquita banana even during the few times it tries to beat you to a pulp. Tread: About 2 miles of light-duty dirt road commence the tour followed by 7 miles of variably rutted doubletrack. The remaining miles follow an infrequently maintained singletrack down to Richards Hollow.
