If you close your eyes, this ride is as mundane as slogging out tedious midwinter miles on your trainer in a windowless basement, for there is nary a pimple of a hill along the way to offer any terrain variance. Open, your eyes will fall upon sights that define northern Utah.
Rows of towering block-faulted mountains bound the post-Ice Age Great Salt Lake, and a compact but distinctive city skyline marks the hub of a sprawling metro boasting a million-plus inhabitants. From the ride’s turnaround at the Great Salt Lake State Marina, you can whiff the lake’s salty air and gaze to distant islands and mountains, and the Ottoman-style Saltair Pavilion along the way gives the ride an oddball Middle Eastern flair.
