This can be done as part of a day or an afternoon exploring Pattee Canyon or as a single short, technical climb with rewarding views. The scene from the top of Mount Sentinel is amazing, providing glimpses of all the five valleys surrounding Missoula and an almost bird’s-eye view of the town itself. Surprisingly, given the popularity of the area for hikers and bikers, the summit of Mount Sentinel doesn’t really see that many visitors— but that’s testimony to the challenge of this trail. Tread: Mixed single- and doubletrack with some sections of dirt road and jeep track in various stages of deterioration.
