The Sawmill–Curry Gulch Trail System forms the heart of some of Missoula’s best mountain biking (not to mention hiking). This ride offers a great opportunity to become acquainted with the topography and landscape that makes Missoula an unsung mecca of mountain biking in the Northwest. Still, the Sawmill-Curry Gulch Loop sees a lot of usage and should be explored—if possible—on weekdays and other times when it’s not teeming with visitors. Or try to use the route as a launching pad for other easily accessible loops. On this ride you’ll see where some of the valley’s original homesteaders laid down roots, and if you get to it early enough in the season, you’ll beat the knapweed that has invaded the Rattlesnake ecosystem and enjoy greenery throughout the trip. Tread: Singletrack, jeep trails, and a small stretch on a vehicle-free gravel road on the way in and out.
