Long miles of forest road await in the Superior National Forest, and this loop offers 25 of them with a mix of scenic road riding and a remote trail. The distance is long for a mountain bike ride, and the section through the woods on the North Shore State Trail rattles your bones pretty good. Several options exist here to change gears a bit if you want: Just ride the trail portion as an out-and-back ride, stay on the western forest roads for scenic cruising, or stay closer to “civilization” on the county roads to the east. The state trail is a very beautiful ride, but the grass is high enough to hide the roots and rocks and holes that make the ride a little taxing. Also, stay alert to the different hunting seasons to avoid taking a bullet, or at least wear your blaze-orange lycra. The campground at Devil Track Lake is a good one, and a fine place to establish your base camp. Tread: Gravel forest road; paved and gravel county road; grassy trail.
