This trail is very similar to Ride 48. The shoreline here is spectacular and makes it difficult to keep your eyes on the trail. There are plenty of great views of the lighthouse right off the bat and good tread conditions. When the path continues on the other side of the highway, it becomes a ski/hike/bike trail: grassy and muddy. This is still a fun ride and the forest is inviting, but plan on dismounting a few times if you don’t have a high skill level—the many low sections had deep enough mud to bring my bike to a rapid halt. I enjoyed the trail on the lake side of the highway much better. Tread: Mix of hard-packed dirt and grassy ski trail.

This 9 miles trail actually starts about 40 miles north on 61 out of Duluth, take the shoreline road, very beautiful. Starts at an obscure trailhead, well beyond Twin Harbors. They should have another 8 odd miles added to this trail by next summer. Talk about the most gorgeous fall ride! Breathtaking. Probably a great ride in any season. The light house is a short branch off the trail and certainly worth checking out, a huge hotspot for tourist and locals. Also take short hiking gear along because there are many short hiking trails that lead off the main biking trail along the coast that we intend to check out next year. Even though this is only an 18 mile round trip, there is so much to do and see a day is not long enough. We had to drive 8 hours to get there and between this trail and a fascinating Osaugie trail run that parallels a long sandy shore line it was more than worth it. The fall colors were peaking first week of October. Mark and Lana Smith eaglsees@sio.midco.net
