This is a long loop, but the chance to visit this incredible forest makes it worth the effort. The best part of the ride, and for me the whole point of coming out here, is the opportunity to experience this arboreal marvel. These 300-year-old trees exude an aged strength and authority and beauty that weaken my words to inadequate patter. This is a place to linger and know the peace of the North Country. Keep an eye out for critters like bald eagles and hawks, weasels, pileated woodpeckers, and white-tailed deer. Thanks to a mapping goof in 1882, the Lost Forty (actually 144 acres) was saved, and thankfully all of it is managed to maintain its unique character. Tread: Gravel and paved forest roads.
