shorter and less technical than most of the rides in this area, the Needham Town Forest loop is perfect for riders just breaking into the sport. The trails within the 200-odd-acre park run the gamut from plain-Jane fire roads to frighteningly rocky sections. But no one specific element dominates. One readily noticeable feature of the forest is how wet it get-or rather, stays. Even though this ride was mapped after a bout of heavy rain, the drainage is typically slow and most water crossings have boards and logs across them all year long. Though the wet conditions can make for some insect-laden riding, the soggy soil provides a substantial foundation for hundreds of native plants and flowers. It's these conditions that draw the many hikers and naturalists to the area. Terrain: Various doubletrack with some roots and rocks. Minimal uphills and downhills. A few short sections of singletrack and rutted sections of doubletrack fire road. One area of technical rocks and tight singletrack.
