Climbing up Canaan Mountain to its broad, spruce-sprinkled summit, this rugged rail-trail explores a less traveled route, virtually assuring glimpses of wildlife: white-tailed deer, grouse, wild turkeys, even black bears. It’s beautiful year-round, but there’s something magical about winter, when snow transforms the landscape into a glistening wonderland, ideal for cross-country skiing. Climbing from Canaan Valley to Canaan Mountain’s plateau summit, this forested rail-trail brings you to beautiful upland bogs, where russet grasses wave in gentle breezes, tangles of rhododendron bloom bright in spring, red spruce and hemlock tower upward, and slow-moving, crystal-clear creeks reflect an enormous blue sky. As rail-trails go, this one is steeper than most, but the climb up Canaan Mountain is gradual, with only a couple of steep segments. Bikers will find the trail technical with its rocks, roots, and logs.
