I ride this trail every summer at least once when I visit family in Tidewater. I ride a fixed gear road bike and it's perfectly doable as the sand is never too deep. The section through First Landing State Park is heartbreakingly beautiful.
This trail is a backyard favorite here in VB. Although not challenging, the trail is flat from 64th St parking lot to Shore Dr, but provides the setting for a good workout. Many runners, bikers, hikers and walkers (sometimes with dog in tow) utilize this trail. The other side of the Cape Henry trail goes from 64th St parking lot to the Narrows boat/beach area which is a little more fun for biking. Very good scenery. This park was quite a suprise for me. I didn't know such a place could exist in the midst of Virginia Beach, but it does and I like it. The diversity of the area is impressive, riding through marshes, then deciduous forest, then dunes and ponds. Packing all this into a six mile trail really keeps it interesting. My only complaint was that the side trails were off limit to bikes and that there was only six miles of trails. C'est la vie... The bugs aren't too bad, and the people population isn't really all that dense on the trail, but you will see an occasional biker. Enjoy.
