This quiet, rustic trail along an old trolley route leads into a stream-crossed valley, far from the bustle of Ellicott City. The valley attracts all kinds of bird migrants. Winter snowfall makes it a fleecy wonderland. Surface: Asphalt, with a short segment of boardwalk. Right away you enter the impressive cut through a 100-foot rock ravine, hand-carved to make way for the trolley tracks. A boardwalk leads into a splendid, stream-crossed valley, seemingly a world away. Upon the opening of the trolley, this same sylvan enclave was described in the November 2, 1895, issue of Argus: “The beautiful Cooper Branch Valley . . . abounds with superb natural scenery, and is bounded on each side by dense forests.”
