Subterranean limestone channels carry the Santa Fe River under much of the single- and doubletrack 3.5-mile horseshoe loop off an 16 mile out-and-back. The route goes by several sinks, or ponds, where the river's limestone ceiling has caved in. Much of the trail is shaded by an oak upland forest, and the lower elevations are a haven for such swampy species as cypress. Your ride on the doubletrack will no doubt bring several sightings of deer, and you can tell where turkeys scratch in the leaf litter. The singletrack sections are tight, with twists and curves to rival the best off-road track in Florida. And for technical tests of balance, the bottoms between Riverrise and Bellemy Road have long section of thick roots rising above the soil.

I explored the River Trail at O'Leno State park on November 14, 2007. It is the trail to hike if you want a later afternoon hike that is about 45 minutes. It is simply beautiful and shows that Florida does have fall color. The river sink is a one of a kind attraction.
