This ride rolls gently up and down between about 1,700 feet and 1,900 feet. Watch for an occasional motorized vehicle on the two-wheel-drive roads. You can reach the trailhead from either Pittsfield (to the north) or Becket (to the south). From the common in the center of Pittsfield, a lively hub city in western Massachusetts, turn east onto East Street, pass a large school, and fork right onto Elm Street. Blend left into Williams Street, and at Burgner Farm (a large farm stand with fresh foods and baked goods) fork right onto Washington Mountain Road. After 5 miles, turn right onto unpaved West Branch Road and park at a wide turnoff on the right (this is public land). Ride up four-wheel-drive West Branch Road until you reach an intersection with a huge clearing on the other side of it; helicopters sometimes land in this clearing. This is Four Corners.

Very little signage, but easy to follow with Oct Mtn Forest trail map. Stay off Gorilla Trail unless you are a rock junky. Vagabond trail is intermediate rocky. All very sloppy after lot of rain. Road sections are clean. Chat with hikers coming off App. Trail is a hilite.
