Centuries ago glaciers carved out the rocky shoreline that distinguishes Maine's coast from the smoother Atlantic seaboard farther south. The glaciers scooped out a series of distinct peninsula's reaching south into the ocean. One of these, the finger of land from Damariscotta to Pemaquid Point, offers excellent cycling. A local newspaper call this ride "the best one-day bike ride in Maine." It passes through traditional coastal villages, where fishing is still a way of life. A lobster lunch, a lighthouse, spectacular ocean views, a sandy beach, a possible boat cruise, and historical sites will beckon you to stop regularly. Terrain: rolling coastal terrain with several steep and long hills. Traffic/Safety: watch for some faster-moving traffic on Routes 32, 129, and 130.
