This exhilarating and challenging tour explores the land formed by the Sheepscot and Kennebec rivers as they flow into the islands between Bath and Boothbay Harbor. Its 55 miles of rolling roads lead from the historic seafaring town of Wiscasset to modest farming communities inland and the old mill town of Richmond, before following the Kennebec River back to the sea. The ride avoids Maine’s crowded coastal roads, opting instead for a riverine landscape. It’s a good excursion for September and October too, when the weather turns crisp, brilliant leaves begin to rattle off the trees, and the season’s crops of pumpkin and squash dot the acres of fields that slope toward the Kennebec River. Be sure to stop and enjoy the sights along this rural ride. Terrain: rolling hills between two rivers. No major climbs.
