Welcome to the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. If you have already experienced some of the Kettle’s challenging topography in the Southern Kettle region, you will appreciate the similarities here in the Northern Kettle. This challenge starts in a town named after a local Indian chief, crosses the river, and follows its bank up to the kettled forest. Passing through a village named for a city in New York where many “Yankees” were from, the route jogs east up along the lush green farmlands that border the moraine. Turning north you pass through a settlement named after an Irish statesman. Farther north encounter a steady but modest incline as the route meanders around the irregular kettle pockets, scattered over the forested floor, to a town named by the founder’s wife. After visiting the historic stagecoach inn and park, the fun really begins when cruising down the twisting Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive. At the far end of Long Lake, visit a community with a working mill, named after a town in Scotland. Now turning south, past the Ice Age Trail Center, it’s an easy cruise along the Milwaukee River back to Kewaskum.
