WILLKOMMEN! is how the sign will greet you as you enter New Ulm. This area contains an important part of the state’s history and is at the heart of the scenic Minnesota River Valley. On this route you will visit several parks, starting at the Putting Green Environmental Adventure Park. You will meander through New Ulm’s city streets up to a state park that was once was used as a prisoner-of-war camp in World War II. From this park the route travels through the lowlands of the Cottonwood River to a park, town, and lake all named after an Indian chief. Soon you will see where steamboats brought troops in 1853 to lay out the site for Fort Ridgely and where you can play a round of golf on the state park’s nine-hole course. Then travel the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway back to a town with German charm and tradition.
