This trail system is a ride through Copper Country history. Starting at the Lake Fanny Hooe Resort, the original site of the Fort Wilkin’s Garden, the trail leads to the 377-acre Estivant Pines Sanctuary, a stand of old-growth Eastern white pine. Mechanized vehicles of any type are strictly prohibited here, so drop your bike before strolling through the forest. Later the Red Trail climbs steeply past the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and continues along an old hiking trail, both 1930s WPA projects. Cyclists need to thank local fat-tire enthusiasts for grooming the excellent singletrack trails. Tread: 1.2 miles of paved road, 3.3 miles of dirt road, 2.0 miles of doubletrack, 5.3 miles of singletrack.

CAUTION: My wife & I are giving this trail a 3-star. Here's why: The trail system in Copper Harbor is fantastic. 5-stars all the way. BUT, go to the visitor center in downtown in Copper Harbor, & pick up a trail map. The trail system is much more developed than this guide on trails.com. Furthermore, this guide on trails.com can no longer be followed. At the 4.2-mile point, we did indeed find the right turn onto the two-track, but it went into a clearing that had all possible exits bulldozed shut with logs & berms. Pay the $5 for the up-to-date map, & skip this trails.com guide unless you find a more recent review indicating updates. - Bruce & Suzanne` Chapman - Wooster, OH
