A historic logging camp, old-growth pines, and a spectacular visitor center make this ride a standout among the cross-country ski trails turned mountain bike trails that northern Michigan offers. The largest state park in the Lower Peninsula, Hartwick Pines was established in the late 1920s in memory of Major Edward Hartwick, who died during WWI. History can also be found as you pedal along the wide trails and pass by the Logging Museum and Camp, commemorating Grayling’s lumber industry. After leaving the camp turnoff, the rolling hills get progressively steeper and sandier. When you return to the visitor center, stroll along the short Old Growth Forest Foot Trail, winding through a forty-nine-acre white pine grove. Tread: 7.7 miles of doubletrack.
