This ride is proof that the North Country Trail (NCT) offers mountain bikers some of the prettiest scenery and most interesting terrain in Michigan. Pedaling south from Starvation Lake, the NCT rolls past Eagle Lake and into deep forest. The north section of the ride from Alba to Starvation Lake lacks some of the scenery of the southern section and is much brushier. The first 1.5 miles roll steeply, but the rest of the ride is either flat or gently rolling. If you only have time for a short ride, cycle the Starvation Lake to Kalkaska County Road 612 section. The return route is on paved and dirt roads, although it can just as easily be ridden out and back or as a shuttle. Tread: 16.9 miles of singletrack, 1.5 miles of doubletrack, 5.6 miles of dirt road, 8.2 miles of paved road.

Were unable to find the trail where it crosses Indian Trail Road. There is a snowmobile and orv trail right where I think the hiking trail should be. How can someone hike safely, when there may be an ORV coming up behind you - I guess one has to listen well. The same ORV and snowmobile trail also crosses 612 just E of sunset trail road. I think they have used the North Country Trail for the ORV and Snowmobile persons. Is this allowed??
