The Military Ridge State Trail affords beautiful views from the ridgetop, passes through interesting trail towns, and provides access to Blue Mound State Park and Governor Dodge State Park. The trail leaves the rail bed and follows the natural rolling terrain on an asphalt section between Ridgeway and Dodgeville. The trail surface, particularly on the south side of Blue Mound, has soft sandy spots at points where water drains across. Fat tires are recommended. Spur trails into Blue Mound State Park and Governor Dodge State Park are very steep. The trail is mostly open, with occasional shaded stretches. The use of sunblock is advised. Surface: Crushed limestone with wood-planked bridges; some asphalt sections between Ridgeway and Dodgeville and on spur trails into the state parks.

This was a great trail. We started in Verona and rode about 14 miles to Mount Herob where we stayed the night (took a back pack with the necessities). We then started in the morning riding farther turning around at Blue Mount. Seems that Mount Herob is one of the best places to stop if you are interested in finding most things a little town can offer like hotels, motels, eateries, etc. There seem to be only two motels in Mount Herob..we stayed at a place called Kaerab (points for being close in spelling :). With tax it was $56. Room was clean and right next to a Walgreens and a few eateries. Nothing fancy but its all about the ride anyway. The trail offered a lot of scenery. You will love riding up to Blue Mount from Verona. Its a bit up hill (nothing terrible) all the way but coming back is GREAT. If your looking for a stretch this is it and if your new to riding or having ridden a bit, this has plenty of stops along the way every 3-6 miles.
