Just past the Wisconsin-Illinois border, Bong is one of the closest Wisconsin escapes for Chicagoland bikers. Compared to the largely flat topography and suburban surroundings of Chicagoland, many Chi-towers rightly consider Wisconsin a wilderness state with its rivers, backcountry, and even mountain getaways. Though there are no mountains and few rivers or backcountry at Bong State Recreation Area, it is a refreshing chunk of wilderness. To get a sense of what's in store for you, while there are 4,515 acres of land at Bong, only 6 percent is intensely developed. Wide grass trails run through open prairie amid tall swamp grass and open fields. A few mild climbs and the absence of nearby facilities aside, this is a trail many manage easily. Things to see: Wolf Lake, tall grass.
