The New Fane Trail is one of a handful of mountain bike–approved areas within the bounds of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The trail covers a mix of beginner to advanced terrain allowing riders to warm up on easier trails before tackling the more demanding rides. Four intertwined loops ranging from 0.7 mile to 3.1 miles are offered. What these trails appear to lack in terms of distance is more than made up for in terrain changes and tricky technical sections. Intermediate riders should be able to traverse the 3.1-mile yellow loop from beginning to end within 30 minutes. At several points along the way, riders have the option of shortening the chosen trail by switching loops and circling in a bit early. Rolling meadows and dense forest are the main attractions. The forest is home to white-tailed deer and the occasional roving hawk, waiting to swoop down on unsuspecting field mice. Elevation Change: The majority of the ride is over flat land with some rolling hills that cover 30 to 40 feet of elevation. Most of the hills can be traversed rather easily by throwing the momentum of the previous downhill into the climb.
