Home to more than 400 lakes, the Alexandria area is one of the most popular vacation destinations for water-crazed Minnesotans. Once a main camping ground for the Ojibwa and Sioux Indians, the region was first explored by fur traders from the Red River area in the 1800s. Both groups are undoubtedly would express surprise and shock at what has become of the area. Although still scenic because of the many lakes nestled among rolling hills, the town becomes extremely busy on weekends. Also of note that PGA golf professional Tom Lehman grew up here. If the lack of traffic and the glorious pavement don't bring a huge smile to your face, the soothing scenery should do the job.
