Park Rapids, which began as a logging camp in 1880, lies in yet another area of transition in Minnesota. If you travel from the western part of the state, you'll notice that the competition between forest and prairie begins to favor the forest. Instead of patches of trees dotting fields of row crops, small clearings of alfalfa and row crops lie amid thick forest. This zone also marks the point where conifers and birch begin edging out oak and maple as the dominant trees. For families with small children, state trails like the Heartland offer an excellent alternative to riding on county roads.
