As the largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior has played and continues to play an important role in the lives of northern residents. From the first Indians who lived along the rocky north shore, to the voyageurs who plied the icy waters in 36-foot canoes loaded with fur pelts, to the massive ore boats that transport untold tons of taconite pellets from the iron ranges of northern Minnesota, Lake Superior is to the North what the Mississippi is to the South.

This is a great area to bike in. What beautiful scenery! If you come to Minnesota, definitely bring your bike to the Northshore. In addition to this terrific bike path, there are wonderful hiking trails in the area as well. Great campgrounds, but make reservations well ahead of time. This is a great summer trip.
