The most remarkable aspect of this ride may be what you see before and after it instead of on it. As you pedal along, you'll see a scenic north woods lake, endless tracts of forest, and piles of reddish iron-ore tailings. But the most spectacular sight-the Hill Annex Mine-sits at the top of the hill where the ride begins and ends. From an observation platform 500 feet above the floor of the huge open pit, you'll have spectacular views of the mine. And just east of Calumet, piles of red rock tower like miniature mountains above Highway 169. The town lies on the Mesabi Iron Range, once the richest-known source of high-grade iron ore in the world. Like many other mining regions, it has a history of boom and bust.
