Appropriately called the City of Lakes, Minnesota's largest city can trace much of its history to an association with water. Minneapolis, whose name combines the Indian word for "water" with the Greek word for "city" (polis), had origins as a sawmill and flour mill for the soldiers at nearby Fort Snelling. First known as St. Anthony for the falls on the Mississippi River, the small village merged with a neighboring town and grew into a major lumber-and flour-milling center.
