This scenic ride starts in the small valley town of Taylors Falls, which sits at the head of the highest and steepest cliffs along the St. Croix River. Many years ago this section of river became known as the Dalles of the St. Croix. Some of the lava cliffs in this Midwest gorge tower high as 200 feet over the river, while in places the water depth reaches 100 feet. Settled in 1838, the town became an important lumbering center during its early years. Besides being a historic river town, Taylors Falls sits between two state parks and is a popular destination for rock climbers and canoeists. Almost any road from town climbs steeply-except for the one that you'll ride on this loop. It's a long climb out of the valley, yet several level stretches make it more pleasant than a continual ascent.
