Flowing east through the fertile farmland of southeastern Minnesota, the Cannon River joins the Mississippi near the historic town of Red Wing. Before merging with the big river, the Cannon cuts a scenic path through the bluffs and ravines of this rugged area of the state. Tinted a medium brown, the Cannon looks like a river of chocolate milk, and creative types might imagine the dark green of the surrounding hills as scoops of mint ice cream. The trail winds through tunnels of green on a nearly flat converted railroad bed, making it a perfect jaunt for casual cyclists and families. Rail trails work well for families because the absence of motor vehicles eliminates one worry for parents, and route finding is extremely easy. Moreover, it’s easy to turn back at any time if a rider gets tired, as opposed to having to finish a loop. If you have the time, Red Wing is a great place to spend a weekend.

This was a beautiful trail. It had a variety of scenery, including the river, farmland, and forest. There was even a small waterfall in Canon Falls, near the trail head. The path was in great condition, and Red Wing was a great place to stop, shop and grab some ice cream if you wanted a break. This trail was very flat, so was easy for anyone to ride, but long enough if you ride out and back (40 miles) for the more experienced rider to enjoy. There was a campground w/canoe rentals on the trail as well, so it would be accessible for a weekend trip for biking, camping, and/or canoeing. We had a fabulous ride.
