To hardy and conservative Midwest farmers, barns usually represent function over form. For generations farmers have used barns to store bales of hay and shelter livestock. They'd slap a coat of red paint on a barn every five or so years and maybe repair the occasional rotten board. Though most barns were built with simple lines, some builders added decorative features that changed them from structures of functional elegance to works of rural art.
