Occasionally, a cyclist stumbles on a perfect ride. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does the temptation exists to do it over and over. For this ride there is good news and there is bad news. The bad news is that it isn't the perfect loop-it's close, but it doesn't make it. The good news is that it has something for every rider. It a landscape of never-ending hills, the Douglas Trail provides a flat, traffic-free alternative for non-climbers or small children. Although this trail doesn't sit in a river valley as other state trails do, it still provides a relaxing way to enjoy a cruise through farm country. For riders who like to climb, or at least can tolerate ascending, the country road that crosses the trail twice offers the option of two separate loops instead of a single out-and-back. For those who measure success by notching destinations, the trail ends on the outskirts of Rochester, home of the Mayo Clinic and one of the largest cities in Minnesota.
