In a state dominated by prairie to the west, pine forest to the north, and one of the flattest valleys on earth to the northwest, the terrain on this side is startling, even stunning in its abruptness. Located in the driftless region of Minnesota, a land that the last glacier missed, limestone bluffs soar hundreds of feet above the Mississippi River. The ravine-line cliffs that border the river divide the flat river bottomlands from the relentlessly rolling landscape above. In a region that featured land too rugged for crops and a climate that for a northern state is temperate, apples became one of the main crops. If you ride this loop in the spring, you'll see where it got its name. While apple trees cling to the steep sides of the valley, lush fields of corn and alfalfa occupy the less severe pitches that slope gradually away from the river.
