Bears have a way of walking that, to me, is almost catlike. It's a fluid loping, head down, back arched, tentative yet assured. It's the sort of walk that says, "I'll leave you alone if you leave me alone." Before you decide not to do this ride because I saw a bear on it, consider that Wisconsin's northern forests are thick with bear-you just don't see them often because they don't want to be seen. Bears want nothing to do with use and will almost always avoid our presence. Except in popular campgrounds in bear country, where food is a mere Coleman cooler away, bears steer clear of humans. Catching a glimpse of a bear in the wild is a rare treat, as the bear will be doing its best to avoid being seen and get as far from you as it can. Things to see: Minocqua, Northern Highlands State Forest, several lakes, the town of Lake Tomahawk, Bearskin Trail.
