The tour begins at the ferry dock-ferries run more than hourly throughout the summer months-in La Pointe, the only town on the island. La Pointe is filled with gift shops, restaurants, taverns, small inns, and lodging, the latter ranging from rustic to elegant. The town is small-there are only a few hundred year-round residents-and you'll quickly head out on a forested roadway. Mixed hardwoods, pines, and cedars tower along the road's edge, and a soft carpet of ferns seems to glow beneath the trees. Less than a mile into the ride the road begins to level off. Gravel driveways, many grated or otherwise blocked, cut into the trees to the left, protecting the stately homes along the shoreline from unwanted visitors. The roadways are somewhat narrow through the island, but traffic is light and respectful of cyclists. Things to see: Museum, Indian Burial Ground, Lake Superior shoreline, Big Bay State Park, Big Bay Town Park.

The island is pretty much flat. There are some spectacular views of Lake Superior and Big Bay State Park is a must see. However, make sure you are not there during black fly season - or at least don't stop. The ferry ride over is relatively expensive, but there is no other way to get there unless you have your own boat. The Pub in town has great burgers and is a nice place to stop for lunch.
