The Bayfield Peninsula, which juts out into Lake Superior, is one of Wisconsin's more beautiful spots. Although Bayfield is Wisconsin's second-largest county, the locals boast that there isn't a single stop light to be found-good news for bicyclists. On the downside, bicycling possibilities are somewhat limited because of an unusual (for Wisconsin, anyway) lack of paved roads and the extremely hilly terrain up from the shore into the interior of the peninsula. For the cyclist willing to take on the hills, however, the rewards are many, not the least of which is some spectacular scenery reminiscent of more mountainous states. Besides the scenery this ride is a fruit-picker's delight, as it winds its way past raspberry, blueberry, and apple orchards. Things to see: General tourist attractions of Bayfield, fruit orchards in the countryside, outstanding vistas of ridges, Lake Superior, and Apostle Islands.
