This may not be the Garden of Eden, but locals are prone to call it God's Country, anyway, and with good reason. Trempealeau is a quaint, old Mississippi River town that is part Mark Twain, part modern tourist center. From the deck of the restored Trempealeau Hotel, Restaurant, and Salon, established in 1871, the Mississippi must look much as it did centuries before European settlers first spied the river. Bluffs tower high above the broad river on both the Wisconsin and Minnesota banks, giving the area a timeless feel. The heavily forested road through the park is beautiful; it rolls up and down, offering occasional glimpses of the river. Things to see: Trempealeau, Perot State Park, Mississippi River, Lock and Dam No. 6, Trempealeau National Wildlife Area.
