Legend has it that a young warrior was trying to win the hand of a fair but fickle maiden. She would submit to his wooing only if he could catch her in his canoe as she jumped from a bough. The brave Kitch-iti-kipi drowned in the spring in this attempt, however, and that's why its named after him. Another version-more bland-says that Kitch-iti-kipi is the Ojibway word for "great cold water." You decide. Either way, this ride presents Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan's largest spring, found at Palms Book State Park. Forty-five feet deep and 200 feet wide, the spring keeps a constant temperature of 45 degrees F and as an incredible 16,000 gallons of water per minute rushes into it. Things to see: Indian Lake State Park, Palms Book State Park, raft ride over Michigan's largest spring, birches and pines.
