At the west end of Lake Superior lie the Twin Ports, Duluth and Superior, and one of the Midwest's most original bike trails. The Willard Munger State Trail is used as part of the annual Duluth North Shore Cycling Tour, held the first weekend of August. The loops shown here are two of the three offered; the tour also includes a 100-mile route. As you begin the 400-foot ascent out of the lowland on the Willard Munger State Trail, you'll ride through a cut in the lava made when the railroad was pushed through. The prismatic rock fractures tell you the cut isn't a natural feature. The sunken basin of Lake Superior became an easy route for lobs of the continental glaciers that have invaded the area four times in the last million years. The ice sheets scraped and rounded the hardened lava, and in places you can see striations, rows of scratches on the rock face that indicate which direction the ice was moving.

We biked 25 miles round trip near Hibbing; it was pretty but flat.....I look forward to the northern part of the trail!

I road the entire length of the Willard Munger State Trail from Hinkley to Duluth. The condition of the trail was exelent. The trail is all well maintained asphalt all the way other than a short distance on streets in Moose Lake and short distance of no trail just south of Cloquet. I measuered a total distance of 70 miles on my road bike. There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments or rest rooms. The trail passes through J. Cook State Park which has lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. There is a neat railroad bridge crossing the river on the trail just south of the state park and a swinging foot bridge inside the park. Bring a lunch and eat it atop one of the large rocks overlooking Duluth.
