Each autumn the valley of the St. Croix River becomes a mural of brilliant color. This is the time of year several hundred cyclists help the Leukemia Society raise funds by riding the Fall Colors bike Tour. Starting in the picture-postcard river town of Stillwater, the tour includes a 55-mile route as well as the 25-mile loop described here. The ride's starting point, in Pioneer Park, offers a gorgeous overview of Stillwater and the St. Croix. Good food is a big part of the attraction of Stillwater and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Riding north from Stillwater you'll have a mostly gradual climb to the blufftop. A scenic overlook of the St. Croix along the way is a good spot for a hill-climbing break on your way to the village of Marine on St. Croix, a crossroads town that maintains the character of a bygone time.

This is a wonderful ride, but better in the opposite direction. It is best if ridden to the west, and then north from Stillwater. This will take you though now developing, but once farm country. Travel as far north as you have time for, then head east. It is best to go at least as far north as Copas before you head east. When returning to Stillwater, take a detour through O'brian St. Park. Avoid the bike path, as it is rough, the shoulder is a better option, however the highway does carry a bit of traffic. Second option is to head east accross the Stillwater lift bridge into Wisconsin. Go north as far as you like and cross back to Minnesota no further north than St. Croix Falls. Head south directly to Stillwater, or for a less trafficy route, go west and then south. In the summer, the earlier the start the better. Take plenty of water...and the most important item to wear is a big smile!
